Street Nurses Outreach
A community of practice is formed by a group of people for the purpose of working collaboratively in a shared domain of interest. Through the support of The Change Foundation and in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Nursing Secretariat, a virtual community of practice for street and outreach nurses was developed by researchers at McMaster University School of Nursing in partnership with frontline street nurses from across the Province and launched on May 20, 2008.
The mission of this online community of practice is to provide a safe and accessible environment for nurses who work with homeless and underhoused populations in order to share common interests, and explore and address shared issues or concerns so that they can improve the health of their clients. To date, there are 118 community members from across Canada and one international member.
A series of regional focus groups were held in November, 2008 to elicit feedback from community members on the site and its impact on and usefulness to their practice.
